Iron Curtain Memorial

Milan Lukáč / 2008

The Iron Curtain Memorial in Devín holds a prominent place among works created after November 1989 to mark permanent commemoration of the hundreds of victims who were killed trying to cross from Czechoslovakia to the West through the heavily guarded and fortified border.

The work, by Milan Lukáč, was produced in 2008 in preparation for the occasion of a visit by Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II. Creation of the work was initiated by the British Embassy. The Queen unveiled the memorial on 23 October 2008 during the official visit.

The object comprises iron plates and sheets in various formats joined by welded iron profiles. The iron plates bear several smaller patinated bronze plaques with inscriptions relating to the theme of the work and to the commemorative visit of Queen Elizabeth II.
