About

The Bratislava City Gallery established and manages this database of artworks in the public space as a scientific research project. The curatorial selection of works began in 2022, and information is continually being inserted and updated. Progressively, artworks from all five city districts and seventeen self-governing boroughs will be added.

Together with works in their original locations, fragments and works that have been moved, removed, or destroyed are also presented in the following categories:

Data currently processed

102 works in catalogue
6/17 city boroughs

The ambition of the project is to create a dynamic, open database that will regularly be updated and revised with new research findings. The basis of the curatorial selection for the GMB's Bratislava City Art database is works by professional artists (visual artists, architects, designers, and related disciplines) from the post-1945 period represented in the GMB's collections or in the collections of other collecting and research institutions. The focus is on endangered works that require protection and professional maintenance and restoration.

The objective is to present and promote the diverse range of artworks that have been displayed in the public space between the mid-20th century and the present day, and to provide a wide array of information about their meaning, origins, and stories, as well as about their authors, materials, and artistic techniques. This also involves gathering data on the current condition and location of the works, including their GPS coordinates, owners, and custodians. For most works in the public space, it is their inconclusive ownership that results in lack of care and inappropriate treatment.

Records in the database are structured whereby they can progressively be linked to Web umenia and to other registers and catalogues that feature subjects such as gallery and museum collections, modern architecture, cultural heritage monuments, and artworks in the public space in other cities.

The Bratislava City Gallery takes the required steps to identify creators of the artworks and of archival photographic documentation. Copyright claims to the artworks have been duly settled. Relevant data will regularly be updated on the website.

The project is carried out through financial support from Bratislava the Capital City of Slovakia and the Slovak Arts Council.
