Gate of Freedom

The work was created to commemorate the more than four hundred people killed while attempting to escape from behind the Iron Curtain, as well as those forcibly expelled between 1945 and 1989. Establishment of the memorial was initiated by the Nation's Memory Institute and the Confederation of Political Prisoners.

The memorial takes the form of a tall concrete gate into which a fragment of bent iron grating has been inserted from above. In the gate section, the artist incorporated traces of 208 shots and fragments of weapons. The gate is set on a cobbled plateau through which a symbolic walkway leads, expanding into a central pedestal for the laying of wreaths.

In 2013, commemorative plaques with text in four languages were placed at the entrance to the memorial and benches were added as part of the redevelopment of the surrounding area.
