Heart of Europe

The large heart formed of barbed wire is a scaled-up replica of a work from the end of 1989, when borders were opened and all remaining wire was cut from the fence on the border between the then Czechoslovakia and Austria.

The heart was later damaged and lost, probably during the flood in 2002. The replica was unveiled on 17 November 2009 at Hviezdoslav Square. Shortly afterwards, it was transported to Devín and sited on the Slavic Embankment on a new, taller, more stable pedestal.

Heart of Europe was unveiled anew on 10 December 2009.

The pedestal features metal plaques with inscriptions in Slovak and English.

Research status as of 15. 11. 2022.
