Andrej Bagar (1900–1966) was an important figure in Slovak theatre who worked as an actor, director, and teacher, and founded the Front Theatre during the Slovak National Uprising.
The monument, designed by Prof. Kuzma, comprises two elements on separate pedestals: a larger-than-life figure (by F. Bollo) and a stylised object with inscription (by D. Kuzma).
The work was originally installed in the Old Town, in the central section of Hviezdoslav Square. At that time, the statue of Andrej Bagar holding a hat in his right hand faced symbolically towards the historic building of the Slovak National Theatre. However, the oversized monument did not fit proportionally or compositionally into the square, and formed a barrier to the pedestrian route. In 2004, with agreement of the city districts, it was relocated to Družba Park in Dúbravka. A suitable and more accessible place was found in the large park for the monument, which is delineated by a semicircle of concrete blocks. Low concrete circles and semicircles are found elsewhere in the park demarcating flowerbeds, rest areas, and the nearby Kyiv Days column.
In moving to the park, the monument benefits from a visual distance that was lacking in its original location. By happy coincidence, it fits naturally into the well-kept green space near the street that in 1972 was named after Andrej Bagar.
