Main elements of the sculptural output of Pavol Tóth, a member of the Mikuláš Galanda Group, were the female figure and female body. His interest was not in representing realistic individual forms, however, but in modern depictions of the female archetype in a maximally reduced and stylised form. Through these forms, he focused on expressing timeless values ever-present in human culture – the image of woman as goddess of fertility, mother, and protector of life. He was inspired by his study of prehistoric cultures and by archaeological finds of Venus figurines, not only in terms of form but also with regard to content. Through his simplified representations of the female body, Tóth communicates a full range of human emotion – joy, love, erotic tension, sadness. Set in urban environments between prefabricated buildings, his sculptures appear archaic, as though a legacy from an ancient, long-forgotten age.
