A large statue of a stylised lion is located on the Danube embankment near the Grand Hotel River Park. The artist, South Korean sculptor Ji Yong-Ho, depicted the animal in dynamic motion, its mouth agape, and with huge teeth and claws. The dynamism is emphasised by the image of taut muscles and by the glossy black surface of the sculpture, which was created using hundreds of cut rubber strips. The work is part of the artist’s series Mutants, in which he focuses on depicting oversized animals and mythical hybrid creatures. His aim is to draw attention to various genetic experiments and environmental issues, which is also reflected in the use of old tires, a distinctive material that the artist has long employed in his work. The irregularly shaped pedestal upon which the black lion is mounted was designed by O. Lewis, and features a faceted surface made of recycled aluminium.
The statue is positioned on the waterfront in such a way that it commands attention. This, however, interferes with circulation along the promenade, which is used by both pedestrians and cyclists, and which narrows at this section due to the River Park complex. Not far from the Lion 4 statue, a scaled-down replica of the Maria Theresa sculpture, created by Martina Zimanová, has been installed. As a result, the riverside terrace currently appears somewhat chaotic.
