The Lovers statue forms part of a fountain at the centre of the square. It remains a natural landmark of the space, although the site is currently somewhat degraded by surrounding parking areas and busy traffic. The bronze sculpture rests on a marble-faced pedestal in the middle of a circular basin. Depicting a man and woman seated facing each other in embrace, it represents relationship and intimacy, mutual communication, connection, and silent contemplation. The figures are portrayed in a symbolic, abstract way, their lines and the contrast between mass and empty volumes emphasising their mutual spatial relationship. The composition of the sculpture is balanced, affording the viewer different ways of perceiving the captured moment from every angle. Stylistically, the sculpture is typical of the early 1960s, when figurative depictions were evolving towards a modernist expression. There are several casts of the sculpture in the public space (e.g. the Promenade in Piešt'any).
The work was exhibited in 1963 at a national fine art exhibition at Prague Castle Riding Hall.
A granite cladding was recently added to the fountain surround and does not match the period aesthetics; its shiny surface is distracting.
Note: In 2001, the original rectangular basin was replaced by a circular design as proposed by A. Trizuljak Jr.
