Together with the nearby work Family by Rudolf Uher, the bust of Jur Hronec sculpturally adorns the space in front of the Jur Hronec university dormitory on Bernolákova Street.
The student dormitory was designed by the architects Ľudovít Jendreják, Ferdinand Konček, Iľja Skoček, Ľubomír Titl, and Georg Thursunov in 1960, and was constructed between 1961 and 1967. In 1966, they received the Dušan Jurkovič Award for the architectural design. The dormitory was built to accommodate the growing number of university students in Bratislava in the 1960s.
The bust of the prominent Slovak scientist and mathematician Jur Hronec (1881–1959) rests on a console pedestal set into a washed concrete wall that borders the green space in front of the northwest face of the dormitory.
Jozef Kostka created his first portrait of the scientist between 1942 and 1943, a work currently stored at the Slovak National Gallery in Bratislava. The artist’s realistic design of the bronze bust demonstrates high-level knowledge of the modelling potential of bronze, and is typical of his portrait work.
To the right of the statue is a long metal plaque with an inscription from Prof. Hronec's first matriculation lecture in 1939: ... YOU, YOUNG ACADEMIC CITIZENS, IF YOU LOVE YOUR NATION AND YOUR STATE, YOU WILL WORK PRODUCTIVELY AND INCREASE YOUR WEALTH AND THUS ALSO THE WEALTH, ESPECIALLY THE INTELLECTUAL WEALTH, OF THE NATION AND THE STATE.
Professor Jur Hronec was a world-renowned scientist and is commemorated in Bratislava by further memorial works located at Comenius University, the Slovak University of Technology, and in the lobby of a high school that bears his name.
