The sculpture Family, together with the bust of Jur Hronec, is a sculptural embellishment of the space in front of the Jur Hronec university dormitory on Bernolákova Street.
The student dormitory was designed by the architects Ľudovít Jendreják, Ferdinand Konček, Iľja Skoček, Ľubomír Titl, and Georg Thursunov in 1960, with construction taking place between 1961 and 1967. In 1966, they received the Dušan Jurkovič Award for their architectural design. The large-capacity dormitory was built for the growing number of university students in Bratislava in the 1960s.
Family was installed on a simple travertine prismatic pedestal within the paved area in front of the dormitory to the west of the entrance.
Created in 1976 by the renowned Slovak sculptor Rudolf Uher, the work comprises three sculptures stylised as geometric cubes, and bears the characteristic features of the artist’s work from the 1960s. In form, the figures are significantly simplified, minimalist, even abstract, but with a hint of monumentality that indicates archetypal and universal representation, an element that Rudolf Uher brought to Slovak sculpture.
Following expansion of the car park in front of the dormitory, in recent years the work finds itself on a small island between cars and is difficult to access or view from a distance – an unworthy way to treat a sculpture by one of Slovakia’s most important and internationally renowned sculptors. Nearby, there is a neglected atrium with other works of art.
