The Jur Hronec student dormitory was designed in 1960 by the architects Ľudovít Jendreják, Ferdinand Konček, Iľja Skoček Sr, Ľubomír Titl, and Georg Thursunov, and was built between 1961 and 1967. In 1966, the architects received the Dušan Jurkovič Award for its design. The dormitory was constructed to accommodate the growing number of university students in Bratislava in the 1960s.
The space in front of the dormitory is adorned with three works of art. In front of the entrance stands the sculpture Family by Rudolf Uher. The northeastern aspect of the area is bordered by a long washed-concrete wall, and the side facing the entrance courtyard features a bronze bust of the scientist Prof. Jur Hronec by the sculptor Jozef Kostka. The wall delimits a relaxation area on the eastern side – an atrium – whose space is dominated by a currently inoperative cascade fountain. The atrium originally featured the sculpture Female Student by Vladimír Kompánek, the fate of which is unknown.
Along the wall opposite the fountain is a long horizontally composed ceramic relief by the sculptor Alojz Klimo. The abstract relief is formed of ceramic tiles of various geometric shapes and colours complemented by sculptural motifs.
A. Klimo is a prominent and leading figure in the geometric-abstract line of Slovak fine art in the second half of the 20th century. This ceramic relief is one of the finest works of its kind, but is is threatened by long-term neglect and by deterioration of the entire atrium, including the fountain with which it originally formed a harmonious composition.
