Three Bronze Sharks

Michal Gabriel / 2010 – 2011

The sculpture comprises three separate objects and is located in the longitudinal atrium between the buildings of the River Park complex. The shark sculptures, installed at eye level on a grassy strip raised above the pavement, were created by the eminent Czech sculptor and educator professor Michal Gabriel. He is a founding member of the Tvrdohlaví [Stubborn]art group, as is Jaroslav Róna, the creator of the nearby sculpture Mythical Ship.

Michal Gabriel has long focused on figurative art in a broad sense, and is interested in depicting people, animals, and various mythological or fantastical creatures and archetypes. His trio of sharks appear to be swimming in water, an effect enhanced by the slender metal posts upon which they are supported. The depiction is not descriptive; it focuses on capturing the dynamics of swimming and typical anatomical features. The impression of rapid movement through the water is accentuated by the polished metal and the setting within a tall, narrow atrium into which the sun barely reaches. It has the ambiance of a narrow canyon where a greenish “aquarium-like” glow continually reflects from the sharks’ bodies and surrounding glass walls. The concept for the shark atrium was created by the Czech architect and designer B. Škorpilová. Although the theme may initially appear simple, the sculptor made excellent use of both the material and the setting to produce a striking outcome. In addition to depicting fascinating marine creatures, the work carries with it a certain irony, as the developers who built this complex are often referred to as financial sharks.

The artwork is less known to the public due to its location in a side atrium away from the busy Danube promenade and its numerous sculptures. During the summer heat, however, it is precisely this quiet spot that offers a day-long cool respite – and the option of sitting on designer benches or a low wall as the sharks swim nearby.
