Girlfriends

Juraj Hovorka / 1983

The sculpture, which stands on a shallow square pedestal, is a composition of three larger-than-life figures. The stylised female figures are portrayed closely facing each other, using expressive hand gestures and engaged in friendly conversation. The artist took care to individualise each figure, their hairstyle, gesticulations, and the dynamic details of their drapery.

The work is located in a small park near a gap in a long row of prefabricated buildings in a relatively tranquil part of the housing estate.

The work also exists as an intimate bronze sculpture from 1980, cast after a scale model of the original design. The small bronze sculpture and large-scale polymer concrete work provide an interesting insight into the process of sculptural creation, a comparison of materials, details, scales, and environment. The bronze sculpture was created in several casts that are currently held at the artist’s estate and in the collection of the Gallery of M. A. Bazovský in Trenčín (see webumenia.sk).
