Linden Bud

Alexander Bilkovič / 1985 – 1986

The monumental sculpture Linden Bud is situated in a fountain that features a large irregular polygonal basin with a shallow travertine-clad concrete rim. The basin’s inner walls are lined with river pebbles; it was originally designed as an environment for water lilies.

The fountain is set among residential buildings within an open zone designed for relaxation.

The sculpture, by Alexander Bilkovič, dominates this space. It stands independently, not forming part of the water circulation, as spray streams from nozzles located around it. The sculpture’s exceptional composition produces a dynamic, curving, ascending line. Although the sculpture is intended to form part of a water feature, the fact that the basin remains dry for part of the year does not detract from the work as a striking sculptural image.

The monumentality and plasticity of Bilkovič's sculptures produce a profound effect on the viewer regardless of the circumstances.

The work is sculpted in bronze, and a low concrete plinth raises it above water level.

The author conceived the plant motif in a highly symbolic way, seeking to create an object with reference to the real world but as a thoroughly modern work of art. The abstracted biomorphic shape is dynamically distributed in space. Simple lines and elegant curves significantly lighten the mass, and rounded contours contrast with the horizontal joints.

The sculpture has been exposed to the elements for many years, and a distinctive patina provides its characteristic colouring.

Research status as of 30. 11. 2022.
