Pigeon Fountain

Pigeon Fountain stands in the Medical Garden, in a section separated from the central area by a fence around the premises of the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Medicine of Comenius University in Bratislava. Along with two entrance sculptures, drinking fountains, and the large Swan Fountain, which are the work of the sculptor Rastislav Miklánka and architect Pavel Mikšík, they form part of the modern sculptural embellishment of the Medical Garden. The works were installed during comprehensive reconstruction of the garden between 1985 and 1988 according to a design by the architect A. Torma and sculptor T. Schotter. The current Medical Garden was established in the 1770s as a Baroque garden adjacent to the palace of Prince Aspremont.

Pigeon Fountain stands within the original Baroque stone basin, and has a stone column with a stone water bowl at its centre. The rims of the base and bowl are decorated with engraved floral motifs. A composition of four bronze pigeons with their wings spread and raised is mounted on the stone column. Water sprays from the top of the column and falls into a stone receptacle, from where it flows into the basin. The floor of the basin is clad with stone slabs.
