The small park on American Square was created between 1932 and 1933 based on a concept by Jozef Mišák (1866–1939), a renowned Czechoslovak gardener who worked at the arboretum in Tesárske Mlyňany. Its greenery enhances the southwestern area in front of the Avion residential and commercial block, built between 1930 and 1931 according to a design by the architect Jozef Marek. The park extends to the intersection of Krížna, Mickiewiczova, and Špitálska streets.
In 1937, Lion Fountain (currently located in front of the Old Market Hall) was added to the park. It was created by combining two older sculptures from the 16th and 17th centuries, and, with a new lower basin added in the mid-1930s, was installed in this small, interesting park with its high-quality plantings.
As part of renovation of the park in 1970, the fountain was removed and replaced with a simple fountain comprising a plain concrete circular basin with a metal water jet that protruded from a cone of quarry stone. To this day, it remains in this form as part of the park. The basin rim is made of artificial stone, and the central cone is formed of large pieces of quarry stone. Recent renovations to the park included restoration of the fountain, installation of new benches, resurfacing of the walkways, and rejuvenation of the greenery.
