The fountain was created as an embellishment of the park and relaxation area between Gajová Street and Šafárik Square. The park now bears the name of Gabriel Baross, Hungarian minister and the initiator of construction of the Old Bridge. The fountain comprises a rectangular low-rimmed pool dominated by two features – a statue of a girl and a stone lavabo (a wide, shallow bowl).
Inspiration for the statue came from the main character in Sládkovič's volume of poetry Marína, and is reflected through the lyrical depiction of a girl with a rose and the name of the fountain.
The bronze statue, a larger-than-life depiction of a realistic, slightly idealised, nude girl, stands on a tall prismatic pedestal in the northwestern part of the fountain. She faces south towards the Danube and is depicted in subtle contrapposto with her left leg slightly forward. In her right hand, arm bent at the elbow and held forward, she holds a rose; in her left hand, raised to her head, she holds a lock of hair.
The signature "T. Bartfay 1961" is engraved on top of the statue's pedestal.
The basin rim and lavabo with pedestal are made from stone, and the basin floor is made of concrete. The lavabo, located in the eastern part of the fountain, features an asymmetrically sited nozzle that sprays water in a high arc before cascading back into its basin. Further nozzles installed on the basin floor spray water to a height of between 1.5 and 2 metres.
The fountain was created between 1959 and 1961, and the statue was carved in 1961 by the sculptor Tibor Bartfay. Composition and design of the fountain is the work of the architect Lívia Móryová. Currently, the fountain also features evening lighting.
