This spacious fountain comprises a rectangular basin with a low stone surround that can also be used for seating. It is dominated by a bronze sculpture of three stylised, larger-than-life young women playing with a ball. They are in circular formation on a slightly raised platform, and a water jet radiates from the centre. Dynamics of the composition are enhanced by diagonal offset of the sculptures, which creates an impression of instability and movement. The vivid scene is further elevated by the women’s gestures, flowing hair, and playful poses.
The central concept of the fountain is cheerfulness, playfulness – the joy of life. It was installed during modernisation of the Grasalkovič Garden (then known as the Pioneers' Garden) designed by the landscape architect Alfonz Torma, who worked for ZARES (Bratislava City Gardening and Recreation Services). The fountain’s modern spirit mirrored the essence of the garden in both style and theme.
In the 1990s, the garden was recreated as a Baroque garden for the Presidential Palace and was restored to the historical appearance it retains today (Marián Marcinka and Dana Marcinková collaborated on the project). Within this historic setting, the modern fountain is an anachronistic element that nonetheless enlivens the uniform Baroque style of the garden.
Note 04/2024: During extensive revitalisation of the garden, the fountain was thoroughly cleaned (basin and stone perimeter wall).
