The fountain is located in the grounds of the Waterworks Museum of the Bratislava Water Management Company (BVS). It was created in 2014 as part of a comprehensive revitalisation and restoration of the Waterworks Garden. The name of the fountain, which is shaped as a stream flowing around the central island, derives from its drop-like layout. The fountain’s floor features low stone cascades that add interesting visual and audio effects to the flowing water. A small geyser bubbles up in from a nozzle at the base of the fountain, and the central island is decorated with gravel and ornamental grasses. The shallow fountain is also a place for children to play.
The work represents a fine example of what is known as slow architecture, created through complex reflections and a search for connections with nature and the surrounding landscape. Through this holistic approach, the project has been one of the most successful of its kind in the past ten to fifteen years.
Exhibited throughout the garden are various historic waterworks components, fountains, and other elements, all relocated from around the city. New drinking water fountains and other amenities have also been added to the area. The revitalised garden won the Park of the Year award in 2016.
Note: The Waterworks Garden was heavily flooded and hit by a windstorm in the autumn of 2024. Its recovery and regeneration are underway. It reopened to the public in March 2025, but without working fountains as these require more extensive repair, including technological equipment. A date for reopening of the Drop Fountain is not yet known, but we will provide updated information as the situation develops.
Research status as of 24 April 2025.
