The sculpture is located in the entrance atrium of the Faculty of Chemical and Food Technology at STU (Faculty of Chemical Technology at SVŠT) on Radlinského Street. The building was constructed in 1984 based on a design by Jozef Liščák and Juraj Lupták, becoming the fourth and final structure, and completed the extensive campus of the SVŠT university complex, which comprised a cohesive block with a shared courtyard.
The sculpture comprises an inclined hemisphere that stands on a low pedestal. At the centre of its surface is a raised, stylised portrait of the chemist and scientist Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev (1834–1907), originator of the periodic table. An array of radial lines bearing a periodic table of chemical elements emanate from the relief. The individual chemical elements are arranged in columns, one above the other, in accordance with the periodic law.
Originally, the sculpture was intended to be a visual complement to a fountain that ultimately remained unbuilt.
Today, without the water feature, it serves as a sculptural counterpart to the large-scale ceramic mosaic (designed by Jarmila Dicová-Ondrejková and Mikuláš Dic) that is mounted above the main entrance.
