Memorial to the Victims of Communism

Jozef Barinka / 2005

The memorial to the victims of communism was symbolically unveiled on 17 November 2005. It was designed by the renowned Slovak sculptor J. Barinka (also well-known as creator of the trophy collection for the Slovak Ice Hockey Association).

The monument stands in a green area at the western end of the park on Jakub Square. Mounted on a low reinforced rectangular base, the monument takes the form of a wide stone slab. The wider lower section is decorated with reliefs: on the right, the outlines of a face and two hands with palms crossed by stripes – bars – with the stripes and lower face accent in blue; on the left, the engraved inscription TO THE VICTIMS OF COMMUNISM. The rear part of the monument comprises two adjacent stones, with a Latin cross carved into the larger stone on the left.
