Earth

Juraj Hovorka, Jaroslav Kočiš / 1965 – 1972

The monumental artwork Earth takes the form of a huge sphere replete with various perforations, relief elements, and details. An impressive view upward through the object is afforded from below.

The sphere is made of metal alloy – hydronalium – and is mounted on a slender steel-concrete base. Its symbolism relates to its location within the grounds of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV), and seemingly invites detailed examination of the Earth from all sides and from various perspectives.

The work was created following a competition to mark the 20th anniversary of the liberation of Czechoslovakia. Implementation of the monumental object took several years, and over time there were changes in its intended location and method of installation – originally, it was to be sited in a water basin or pond. Despite complications and changes during its course of creation, the result is impressive and timeless both artistically and technically, even after half a century.

According to available documentation, the sphere weighs approximately 1.3 tonnes.
