Happy Childhood (1)

Two reliefs depicting children's games are set into the window sill of the first floor at the entrance to the apartment building on Karadžičova Street. They were created by L. Ľ. Pollák, a renowned Slovak sculptor, monumentalist, and restorer.

Reliefs on the façades of buildings constructed in the 1950s and 1960s generally depicted themes related to the creation of a new socialist society or a contented life and "bright" future in the new society.

Pollák's reliefs belong to the second of these groups. The theme of the figurative scenes is children's games. The relief on the southern window sill depicts a happy family. The central figure is a young mother, shown en face with head in right profile, sitting at a table in a knee-length dress. She rests her right hand on a bowl on the table as she raises her left hand to offer a piece of bread (?) to the girl standing to her left. At the mother’s feet, a cat rests its front paws on her knees.

North of her are four figures, including two girls next to her. The older girl in the background is sitting on a chair holding an open book, body en face and head in profile, looking at her mother. In front of her, shown in profile, the younger girl is leaning with her chin on her arm across the knees of the seated girl. The northernmost pair forms a separate compositional scene. To the left, a boy on a rocking horse is pretending to be a warrior as he holds a sword in his raised right hand and what appears to be a shield in his lowered left hand. He is looking back at a girl standing behind him. She has short hair and is depicted en face looking to her right at the boy playing. To her left, she holds a bowl, stirring its contents.

The group to the south comprises three figures. To the left of the mother, a boy shown en face with his head turned towards her stands offering her a bunch of grapes. He is holding a scooter with his right hand and is resting his right foot on it. The southernmost edge features two figures: a kneeling man, the father, shown in profile with his head turned towards his back, upon which he is holding a young boy.
