Installed in the grounds of the Medical Garden as part of its comprehensive reconstruction in 1985–1988 were two entrance sculptures, drinking fountains, and Swan Fountain designed by the authors’ collective of sculptor Rastislav Miklánek and architect Pavel Mikšík.
The garden restoration project was developed by the architect Alfonz Torma and the sculptor Tibor Schotter. Today, the artworks form part of the modern sculptural setting of the Medical Garden, a space first developed in the 1870s as a Baroque garden of the palace of Prince Aspremont.
During the 1980s reconstruction, Swan Fountain was installed at the centre of the garden in place of Mária, the existing fountain. Mária, also by P. Mikšík, had operated in the Medical Garden since 1976, and now stands in a new basin on Bachova Street in the district of Ružinov.
Swan Fountain, the central artistic and compositional element of the garden, is positioned at the intersection of interconnecting paths, sidewalks, and tree-lined avenues.
It comprises a circular paved area on which stands a stone basin in the shape of a quadrilobe (Gothic quatrefoil). At its centre is a two-tiered pedestal, again in in the shape of a quadrilobe, on which four stylised swans are set in bronze. They are grouped in two pairs that face each other. The bodies of the swans display typical anatomical features – large partially opened wings and slender necks. Metal nozzles located between the swans' bodies can be adjusted to spray water in a variety of ways.
During the fountain’s most recent restoration, four bird baths were added on the rim of the basin.
