World Postman Fountain was created as part of the comprehensive revitalisation of Poštová Street in 2000, a project that involved the BKU architecture and design studio artists Michal Bogár, Ľubomír Králik and Ľudovít Urban. Poštová Street was also provided with design furnishing from the work of world-class artists (lamps by Jean Michel Wilmotte, waste bins and benches by the designer Philippe Starck). Visually, the street was unified by a red pavement with embedded lamps bearing engraved postmarks from various countries. The lamps no longer function, and several have been removed and replaced with concrete fill.
World Postman Fountain stands in front of the underpass to Hodža Square at the intersection of Vysoká and Poštová streets. It comprises a square basin on an angled circular pedestal that compensates for the natural slope of Poštová Street. Granite slabs fitted to the top of the basin’s glass perimeter wall are accentuated at the corners by four stainless steel elements. The fountain floor is clad in granite and incorporates nozzles from which water is sprayed. A bronze stepped column with spiral funnel-shaped upper sections stands at the centre of the basin. Water flows from the top into the lower funnel. The vertical composition is topped by a circular element to which is attached a small abstract figure with a blue glass accent. The figure, stretched sharply to the side and captured in dynamic motion, enhances the expressive character of the work. The structure is bordered by four smaller metal objects that feature abstract reliefs. In 2018, the fountain was repaired by its creator, with vandalism remedied and damaged parts replaced, but presently it is again inoperative.
